Constraint-based User Interfaces - Specification and Solving

This talk discusses some approaches for the solving of systems of linear constraints in the context of user interface layout specifications. The talk will look at two iterative methods: linear relaxation (also known as Gauss-Seidel method) and orthogonal projection (Kaczmarz method). Some extensions of these algorithms and considerations about convergence will be presented.

The talk will also present some work in progress on how the specification of user interface layout can be formalized algebraically. Such a formalization can help to specify and understand software tools for the construction of user interfaces. In particular, a suitable algebra can be used to enable users to specify constraint-based user interfaces without specifying constraints directly.

Speaker: Christof Lutteroth is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland. His main area of research is Human-Computer Interaction. In particular, he works on systems that support the creation of user interfaces.
